Maui Photo Festival, Linda Lee Volunteer Director, Top Talent Photographers teach classes

Barbara Santos, Rich Santos, Maui Photo FestivalI was recruited by my dear friends, Barbara Santos and Rich Santos, to work as the Volunteer Director for the first ever Maui Photo Festival.
We have all worked together for years on the San Francisco Writers Conference, here in the Bay Area.
I was hardly thinking about photography as I set up my volunteer staff and began scheduling and planning my .trip to Maui with my daughter Trini as my assistant. I used to live in Maui, so I was looking forward to getting back there and seeing how much it has changed in the last two decades.

I was impressed by the sheer generosity of the Photographers and of course the talent was endless. Many of our volunteers are quite talented in their own right, and the generous and warm Aloha spirit was alive and well during the Festival.

Zane Mathias
Trini and I are going to buy a good starter camera based on many of the attendees and photographers recommendations, and hopefully we can make it to a few classes in between our duties in 2010.
We both learned how to take better photos with our point and shoot camera, thanks to people like Zane
Mathias, (go and see his amazing images, I love them!) http://www.zanemathias.com/  and Jim Sugar, www.jimsugar.com/ and Eddie Tapp, www.eddietapp.com  taking a few moments to help show us how to take better photos. Thanks guys! I have certainly improved and I even learned how to set the flash, thanks to Zane~ he was patient and a good teacher.

Judy Host

Judy Host is recognized internationally as an accomplished portrait photographer, with studios located in both Northern California and Atlanta, Georgia. A gifted professional with a unique talent for capturing the innocence and trust that lies within the heart of every individual has earned her the respect and recognition of her colleagues for more than a decade. Judy had that rare ability to create a special rapport with her clients that ultimately tells a story or reflects a feeling in that one-of-a-kind portrait. Her skill to paint within natural light and to attend to the smallest detail of the composition is a trait that explains why many times her portraits are mistaken for paintings.

Judy had been featured in several publications for her outstanding environmental portraiture. In 2004 she was featured in Rangefinder magazine as one of “Today’s Top Children’s Photographers.” Her work has been selected for national exhibition by the Professional Photographers of America, where she holds a Masters and Craftsman degree. Judy has received three Kodak Gallery awards, given to those photographers who excel in creativity and the pursuit of excellence in quality. Her images have been exhibited at Epcot Center and are part of a traveling loan collection.

In 2004, Judy was selected by the Hollywood Foreign Press to include a portrait session in the presenter gift box for the Golden Globes. The response was so great that she was asked to participate again in 2005. Judy has photographed for Jack Nicholson, Pierce Brosnan, Nicole Kidman, Mehki Phifer, William H. Macy, Felicity Huffman and many more.  She is currently working with InStyle magazine to publish images on the events leading up to the Golden Globes.

In the last two years, Judy has traveled to Africa to photograph the presidents of Uganda and Rwanda, as well as several orphanages in both countries. She has traveled to Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand to document the progress of the tsunami survivors one year later.

Judy teaches a series of workshops on the “Art of Lighting” and “Creating Your Own Style.” She is also introducing a new series of workshops with Eddie Tapp, a Canon Explorer of Light, and NAPP Hall of Famer. For more information see www.judyhost.com

Randy Jay Braun

Randy Jay Braun brings his retail art gallery experience to the Maui Photo Festival. For twenty years, he has profitably created, packaged, and sold his own photography as art. Randy currently owns Hawaiʼiʼs oldest-running fine-art photography gallery, established in 1989, featuring his own images, as well as the artwork of other photographers.

Traditionally trained as a Registered Biological Photographer and skilled darkroom technician, Randy got his start as a staff medical photographer, specializing in heart surgery documentation. His lifeʼs journey then led him behind the scenes on Hollywood movie sets, where he further learned how to use and control the subtle properties of light.

After spending the summer of 1983 working with Hawaiian children at the Kamehameha Schools on Oʼahu, Randy began to immerse himself with the indigenous culture of the islands. His breakthrough into the world of art came with his sepia-toned portfolio of traditional hula dancers. His hand-tinted images of the ancient dance seemed to bring viewers back to a gentler age. Randyʼs artistic, yet documentary-style work with the Hawaiian people has been compared to that of Edward S. Curtis, who created intriguing images of Native American Indian tribes with his camera a
century ago.

Randy says,“Art has to have soul. An image must evoke an emotion. A good photograph brings you in and won't let you go. As an artist and as a businessman, it is important for me to re-invent myself every so often. My style has evolved constantly throughout the years; moving from powerful black & white portraits, to wildly vivid panoramic landscapes. Currently, I enjoy being on the cutting edge of the digital photography revolution; this industry is a whole new ball game now.”

From selecting imagery, shooting and writing to overseeing a redesign, conceiving photo essays and spearheading the 20th Annual Reader Photo Contest, Barbely has helped ISLANDS win numerous awards in visual excellence. This isn’t surprising. Before joining the title, Barbely climbed the ranks to deputy photo editor at First for Woman magazine. Before that, she graduated with a B.A. in photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology.

These days, however, Barbely is most proud of her ability to shoot in less-than-perfect conditions. “Recently, I shot during a tropical storm in Belize, a typhoon in Thailand and a cyclone off the coast of Australia. You learn a lot in those situations. You have to.”
